Spain & Balearic Islands visa and entry requirements

Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera follow Spain's entry rules, which are the Schengen rules. Find your nationality for the status that applies to you, the documents to carry and how to arrive on the islands.

The Schengen basics

Spain is in the Schengen area. Visa-exempt visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries combined. A non-EU passport must be valid for at least three months after you leave and issued within the last ten years. Status table: Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, consolidated 2025-12-30.

How you arrive

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) have flights from mainland Spain and many European cities. Formentera has no airport: fly to Ibiza and take the ferry from Ibiza Town to La Savina, about 30-35 minutes by fast ferry. Ferries also link the islands with Mallorca and the mainland.

New EU systems

EES (entry and exit records) and ETIAS (a travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors) are being introduced. Dates and any fee are set by the EU: check travel-europe.europa.eu before you travel.

Questions

Do I need a visa for Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera?

The islands are part of Spain and the Schengen area, so the rules are Spain's. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need only an identity card or passport. Many other nationalities can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa; others need a Schengen visa. Pick your nationality above for your page.

What is the 90/180 rule for the Balearic Islands?

Visa-exempt visitors can spend up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, not per country. Days in Spain, including the Balearics, count together with days in France, Italy or any other Schengen state.

Is a separate permit needed to travel from Ibiza to Formentera?

No. Formentera has no airport and is reached by ferry from Ibiza Town; it is the same country and the same Schengen area, so there is no border check. Carry your identity card or passport, as operators can ask for ID.

How long must my passport be valid to visit Spain?

Under the Schengen rules a non-EU passport must be valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area and must have been issued within the previous ten years. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can use a valid identity card.

What are ETIAS and EES for visitors to Spain?

They are new EU systems for visa-exempt travellers: EES records entries and exits, ETIAS is a travel authorisation. Their timing and any fee are set by the EU and can change, so check travel-europe.europa.eu before you travel.

Where do I apply for a Spanish Schengen visa?

At the Spanish consulate, or the visa centre Spain uses, in the country where you legally live. Spain is the right country to apply to when the Balearic Islands are your only or main destination. Fees and processing times are set by the consulate: check its official page.

Do I need a visa to fly to Ibiza or Menorca through Mallorca or Barcelona?

A connection inside Spain or the Schengen area is not a transit: you enter the Schengen area at your first Schengen airport, so the rules for your nationality apply there. Some nationalities also need an airport transit visa when changing planes; check the official list.
