Angolan citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to travel to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is for tourism, family visits or business stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in the country of residence.
What the visa status means
Angola is listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, meaning its citizens must obtain a visa before travelling to the Schengen area. This applies to all Spanish territory, including Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a short stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, visiting family or business.
No special conditions or exemptions apply to Angolan passport holders. The same rules and application process apply regardless of which Schengen country is the main destination. If Spain is the only or main destination, the visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate.
Before you travel and at the border
Apply for the visa well before the planned trip. The application must be submitted at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in Angola. Check the consulate's website for appointment availability and required documents. The visa decision is made by the consulate.
At the border, present a valid passport and the visa sticker. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and must have been issued within the previous ten years. Border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, return flights and sufficient funds for the stay.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport. Travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca may be used as a transit point for connecting flights.
The visa is checked on entry to the Schengen area, not on arrival at the islands if coming from within Schengen. When flying directly from outside Schengen to Ibiza or Menorca, passport and visa checks happen at the airport. Keep the visa and passport accessible during travel.
Staying longer, working or studying
The Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work, study or long-term residence. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, a national visa (type D) or a residence permit is required. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Angola before travelling.
Check the official Spanish government website for visa types and requirements. The process for a national visa differs from the short-stay visa and may involve additional documents such as a work contract or university acceptance letter. Rules change, so verify current procedures before applying.
