Qatari citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including visits to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Apply at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Qatar before departure. The visa is valid for the entire Schengen area, so travel between the islands and other Schengen countries is permitted within the visa's validity.
What the visa status means
Qatari passport holders must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling to Spain. This requirement applies to all Balearic Islands: Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa permits stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, family visits or business. It does not allow paid work or study without additional permits.
The visa is issued by the Spanish consulate in Qatar. It is valid for the entire Schengen area, so a single visa covers travel to other Schengen countries. Check the visa's validity dates and the number of entries allowed before you travel.
Before you travel and at the border
Apply for the visa well before your planned trip. The application process includes an appointment, submission of documents and biometric data collection. Border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, return flights and sufficient funds for the stay. Have printed copies of your visa, passport and travel documents ready.
At the border, the passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. The visa must be valid for the dates of travel. New EU entry-exit systems (EES and ETIAS) are being introduced; check the official EU travel website for updates before you travel.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive direct flights from some European cities. Formentera has no airport; arrive by ferry from Ibiza. Mallorca is a transit point for flights and ferries to the other islands. The visa is checked on entry to the Schengen area; internal flights between the islands do not require additional border checks.
Ferry services from Ibiza to Formentera operate year-round, with reduced frequency in winter. Check the ferry company's schedule before travelling. The visa must be valid for the entire stay, including any time spent on Formentera.
Staying longer, working or studying
The Schengen short-stay visa does not permit stays longer than 90 days in any 180-day period. For longer stays, apply for a national visa (type D) or a residence permit from the Spanish consulate in Qatar. These are issued for specific purposes such as work, study or family reunification.
Working or studying on a short-stay visa is not allowed. To work or study in Spain, obtain the correct visa or permit before travelling. Check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate for the latest requirements and application procedures.
