Ecuadorian citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is issued for tourism, family visits or short business trips. Apply at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in your country of residence before you travel. The visa allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area.

What the visa means

The Schengen short-stay visa covers Spain and all other Schengen countries. It permits a maximum stay of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa is valid for the dates and number of entries printed on the sticker. You cannot work or study on this visa.

For travel to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera, the visa is checked at the first Spanish port of entry, usually an airport or ferry terminal. Once in Spain, you can move freely between the islands and the mainland. Always carry your passport and visa with you.

Before you travel

Apply at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. You must apply in person, usually up to six months before travel. Book an appointment, complete the application form and gather the required documents. The consulate may ask for an interview.

Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. Check the visa sticker for correct dates and personal details. Carry travel insurance and proof of accommodation and funds, though these are checked at the border.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for those islands. Formentera has no airport; fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from Ibiza Town or Playa d'en Bossa to La Savina. Ferries run year-round, but schedules reduce in winter.

Mallorca is not covered by this site, but you may transit through Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) on a connecting flight. The Schengen visa covers the transit. At the border, have your return ticket and proof of accommodation ready. Border officers may ask for evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.

Staying longer or working

The Schengen short-stay visa is not for long stays, work or study. If you plan to stay more than 90 days, work or study in Spain, you need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate before you travel.

National visas have different requirements and processing times. Check the official Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or the consulate's site for current rules. The tourist visa cannot be extended or converted to a work permit while in Spain. Overstaying can lead to fines or a re-entry ban.

How to apply

  1. Determine where to apply: the Spanish consulate or visa centre in your country of residence.
  2. Book an appointment at the consulate or visa centre, usually online or by phone.
  3. Complete the Schengen visa application form and gather required documents.
  4. Attend the appointment in person with your passport, photos and supporting documents.
  5. Provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo) if required; this is valid for five years.
  6. Wait for the decision; the consulate may contact you for an interview or extra documents.
  7. Collect your passport with the visa sticker, and check the dates and personal details.
