Gambian citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa for tourism or business visits to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country of residence. This page outlines the process and documents needed for a trip to these islands.

What the visa means

A Schengen short-stay visa allows Gambian citizens to enter Spain and the other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It is valid for tourism, visiting family or business trips. The visa does not permit work or long-term stays.

The visa is issued by the Spanish authorities. It covers the Balearic Islands—Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera—as part of Spanish territory. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry to La Savina.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply for the visa well before your trip. The application is made at the Spanish consulate or the official visa centre in the country where you legally reside. You must submit the application in person. Check the consulate's website for appointment availability and required forms.

At the Spanish border, present your valid passport and the visa sticker. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. Border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, return flights and sufficient funds for the stay.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for direct flights from Schengen countries. Flights from outside Schengen, including The Gambia, usually connect through a Schengen hub such as Madrid or Barcelona. Formentera is reached only by ferry from Ibiza; there is no direct flight.

Mallorca is a frequent transit point, with ferries and flights connecting to Ibiza and Menorca. If your flight transits through Mallorca, your Schengen visa covers that entry. No sight on Mallorca is part of this site's coverage.

Staying longer, working or studying

If you plan to stay in Spain for more than 90 days, or for work or study, you need a national visa or a residence permit. The Schengen short-stay visa does not cover these purposes. Apply for the correct permit at the Spanish consulate before travel.

For details on long-stay visas, work permits or student authorisations, check the official Spanish consulate website. Requirements vary by purpose and nationality. Begin the process several months in advance, as processing times differ.

How to apply

  1. Check the Spanish consulate website in your country of residence for visa application details.
  2. Book an appointment online or by phone at the consulate or its authorised visa centre.
  3. Complete the Schengen visa application form and gather all required documents.
  4. Attend the appointment in person to submit your application and provide biometric data (photo and fingerprints).
  5. Pay the visa fee (amount listed on the consulate site; no specific figure is given here).
  6. Wait for the processing decision; track your application if the service allows.
  7. Collect your passport with the visa sticker, then book travel to the Balearic Islands.
