Sri Lankan citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is valid for the whole Schengen area, so you can also travel to other member states within the 90-day limit. Apply before you book flights or accommodation.

What this means in practice

A Schengen short-stay visa lets you stay in Spain and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It covers tourism, family visits and short business trips. You must apply before travelling, as there is no visa on arrival for Sri Lankan citizens.

The visa is issued by Spain's consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. You cannot apply at the border. The decision is made by Spanish authorities, so the rules of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 apply.

Before you travel and at the border

Check your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and was issued within the previous ten years. Carry proof of accommodation, return flights and travel insurance. Border officers may ask to see these documents.

At passport control, your fingerprints and photo may be checked against the visa database. Have your return ticket and hotel booking ready. The officer decides whether to let you enter, so answer questions clearly and honestly.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for the Balearic Islands. Formentera has no airport; fly to Ibiza and take a ferry to La Savina. Mallorca is a common transit point, with ferries and flights to the other islands.

When you arrive in Ibiza or Menorca, you clear Schengen border checks at the airport. For Formentera, you clear at Ibiza before boarding the ferry. If you transit through Mallorca, you clear there first. Keep your boarding pass and ferry ticket handy.

Staying longer, working or studying

A short-stay visa does not allow you to work or study in Spain. For stays over 90 days, or for work or study, you need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Sri Lanka before you travel.

The requirements for national visas differ from the short-stay visa. Check the official Spanish government website or the consulate's page for the correct procedure. Do not overstay your short-stay visa, as this can affect future applications.

How to apply
