Hong Kong citizens holding a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport do not need a visa for short stays in Spain. This covers Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera for tourism or business. The stay cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Check the official EU regulation for the full text.

What the status means

Visa-free entry applies to holders of a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport only. Other travel documents from Hong Kong do not qualify. The exemption allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. This includes time spent in Spain and any other Schengen state.

The 90-day limit is calculated as a rolling window. Each day present in the Schengen area counts. A short trip to Ibiza or Menorca uses part of that allowance. Keep a record of entry and exit dates to avoid overstaying.

Before you travel and at the border

Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen area. It must have been issued within the previous ten years. Border officers may ask for proof of onward or return travel and evidence of accommodation.

Carry documents showing sufficient funds for the stay. This can include bank statements or a credit card. A return flight or onward ticket is normally required. The EU is introducing new entry systems: ETIAS and EES. Check the official travel Europe site for current status before travelling.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport. Travel there by ferry from Ibiza. Mallorca is a transit point for connecting flights or ferries; it is not covered by this guide.

At the airport, border officers may check passport validity and the purpose of the visit. Have accommodation details ready. For ferry travel from Ibiza to Formentera, the same visa rules apply. No additional checks are made beyond standard Schengen entry.

Staying longer, working or studying

A visa-free stay does not permit paid work or study courses longer than 90 days. For these purposes, a national visa or residence permit is required. Apply through the Spanish consulate in Hong Kong before travelling.

Check the official site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain for current requirements. The visa application process can take time. Plan ahead and submit all required documents. The Balearic Islands follow the same rules as mainland Spain.
