Burundian citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country of residence. This page explains the process for visiting Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera.

What the visa requirement means

A Schengen short-stay visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area, which includes Spain. For a trip to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera, the visa is obtained before travel. It is valid for tourism, visiting family or business meetings. The visa does not permit work or study.

The visa is issued by the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country where the applicant resides. Applications are made in person. The decision is based on the purpose of the trip, travel history and financial means. The visa is not guaranteed.

Before you travel and at the border

Carry the passport with the visa sticker, return flight tickets, accommodation bookings and proof of sufficient funds for the stay. Border officers may ask for these documents. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years.

At the Spanish border, the officer checks the visa and may ask about the purpose of the trip. Travellers should be ready to show hotel reservations and a return or onward ticket. The officer can refuse entry even with a valid visa if documents are not satisfactory.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive flights from Spanish and European cities. Formentera has no airport. Travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for flights or ferries to the other islands.

On arrival at Ibiza or Menorca airport, proceed to passport control. The visa is checked there. For Formentera, the ferry from Ibiza is a domestic service, so no additional border check occurs. The visa must be valid for the entire stay in the Schengen area.

Staying longer, working or studying

The Schengen short-stay visa does not allow work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, a national visa (type D) or a residence permit is required. Apply at the Spanish consulate before travelling.

For specific requirements for work or study, check the official Spanish consulate website or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs site. Rules change, so verify the current process before applying. The site does not issue visas.
