Vietnamese citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including visits to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is issued by the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Vietnam. It permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Apply well before travel, as appointments and processing take time.

What the visa means

A Schengen short-stay visa allows a Vietnamese citizen to travel to Spain and other Schengen countries for tourism, business or family visits. The maximum stay is 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa does not permit paid work or long-term residence. It is valid for the dates and number of entries shown on the visa sticker.

The visa is mandatory for all Vietnamese passport holders. There is no visa waiver or special exemption for Vietnamese nationals under current EU regulations. The rules apply equally to all Schengen member states, including Spain.

Before you travel

Apply at the Spanish consulate or visa centre in your country of residence. In Vietnam, the Spanish consulate in Hanoi or the visa centre in Ho Chi Minh City handles applications. Book an appointment in advance. The application must be submitted no more than six months before travel.

Prepare a completed application form, a valid passport, recent photographs, travel insurance, flight reservations and proof of accommodation. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. Biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) are collected at the appointment.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport; reach it by ferry from Ibiza. Mallorca is a transit point only for connecting flights or ferries to the other islands. Border checks may occur on arrival, especially for non-Schengen flights.

Carry your passport and visa sticker at all times. The visa must cover the entire stay. If transiting through another Schengen country, ensure the visa is valid for that country as well. The islands are part of the Schengen area, so no additional border controls apply when travelling between them.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow work, study or long-term residence. For stays beyond 90 days, apply for a national visa (visado nacional) or a residence permit from the Spanish consulate before travel. The process is separate and requires additional documents.

Check the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain or the consulate for current requirements. The visa pages of imptbalearic.es do not issue visas or provide legal advice. Rules for long-term stays change; verify them directly with the authorities.

  4. Attend the appointment to submit documents and provide biometric data.
  5. Wait for the visa decision; do not book non-refundable travel until approved.
