If you hold a Bahraini passport, you need a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including trips to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera. The visa allows up to 90 days of travel within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Apply before you travel at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. Plan ahead, as appointments and processing take time.

What this means in practice

A Schengen short-stay visa from Spain lets you enter Spain and other Schengen countries for tourism, family visits or business trips. For the Balearic Islands, the same visa covers Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. You cannot work or study on this visa.

The visa is valid for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Count your days carefully across all Schengen countries. Overstaying can lead to fines or entry bans. Check your visa sticker for its validity dates and the number of entries allowed.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in Bahrain. You must submit your application in person, usually within six months of your planned trip. Gather your documents, pay the fee (check the current amount) and attend an appointment for biometrics.

At the border, carry your passport, visa and proof of accommodation, return flights and travel insurance. Border officers may ask for evidence of funds. New EU systems, ETIAS and EES, are being introduced; check https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ before travelling for the latest entry rules.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive flights from mainland Spain and some European cities. Formentera has no airport. Fly to Ibiza, then take a ferry from the port to La Savina. Ferries run frequently in summer, less often in winter.

If you fly via Mallorca, you will pass through its airport as a transit point. Your Schengen visa covers that stop. From Mallorca, ferries connect to Ibiza and Menorca. Keep your boarding passes and ferry tickets handy for spot checks.

Staying longer, working or studying

A short-stay visa does not permit work or study. For paid work, study or residence longer than 90 days, you need a national visa or a residence permit from Spain. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Bahrain before you travel.

The requirements differ for each purpose. Check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate for the correct procedure. Do not arrive on a tourist visa and then try to change status; that is rarely possible.

How to apply

  1. Check if you need a visa and confirm the Spanish consulate's jurisdiction for Bahrain.
  2. Book an appointment at the consulate or its visa centre in your country of residence.
  3. Complete the Schengen visa application form and gather all required documents.
  4. Attend the appointment in person to submit your application and provide biometrics.
  5. Wait for the decision; the consulate may ask for additional documents or an interview.
  6. Collect your passport with the visa sticker, and verify the dates and entry conditions.
  7. Travel to Spain and carry your visa and supporting documents with you.
