How the island divides

Two coasts, two ends, one reserve.

Locals talk about Tramuntana, the windier north, and Migjorn, the softer south. The two ends, Maó and Ciutadella, have their own character too.

01

North: Tramuntana

Dark rock, red earth and a coast shaped by the north wind. Fornells, Arenal d'en Castell and the lighthouse at Favàritx are here.

It is the wilder half of the island, with fewer trees and more open views. S'Albufera des Grau, the heart of the reserve, sits on this side.

02

South: Migjorn

Limestone cliffs, ravines and white-sand coves under pine. Cala Galdana, Macarella and Son Bou are on this coast.

The most famous coves are busy in summer, and access is managed to protect them.

03

East: Maó and the harbour

The capital sits above a long, deep natural harbour, with Es Castell at its mouth. It is the closest area to the airport.

Sant Lluís and Binibeca are a short drive south, with small coves and white villages.

04

West: Ciutadella

The old capital, with a cathedral, palaces and a narrow port. Sunsets are the west's speciality.

From here, boats sail for Mallorca and the south-west coves are within easy reach.

Questions people ask.

Which area is closest to the airport (Menorca)?

Maó, Es Castell and Sant Lluís are all within about 6 km in a straight line.

Where should I stay for sunsets (Menorca)?

Ciutadella and the west coast.

Which area is quietest (Menorca)?

The north, around Fornells and the coast near S'Albufera des Grau.

Are the distances driving distances (Menorca)?

No. They are straight lines from Menorca Airport, computed from published coordinates. Roads add some distance.

Can I stay inside the natural park?

There are few places to stay inside it. Most people base themselves in Es Grau, Maó or the north coast and visit by day.

How does the north coast differ from the south for swimming?

The north (Tramuntana) has darker, older rock, reddish sand and more wind, with longer walks between coves. The south (Migjorn) is limestone, with white sand coves set under pine. Both have calm days, but the north feels wilder and the south more sheltered. Check the wind forecast before choosing, as exposure differs through the day.

Which inland towns work as a base away from the coast?

Es Mercadal sits under Monte Toro in the middle of the island, Alaior and Ferreries are small inland towns, and Sant Lluís and Es Castell lie near Maó in the east. All keep year-round life, which the coastal areas do not. They put several coasts within reach, though a car helps. Check seasonal opening of places to eat.

How does the Camí de Cavalls connect the different areas?

The bridleway circles the whole coast, about 185 km in 20 stages, so it touches every part of the island. Northern stages are rougher and quieter; southern stages pass near the white sand coves. Stages can be joined from villages and from the coast along the way. Check the Consell Insular de Menorca for route updates and diversions.

Which areas stay open outside the summer season?

Maó, Ciutadella and the inland towns keep year-round life: shops, markets and everyday services. The coastal areas and beach bars largely close roughly from November to April, and seasonal buses stop running. Winter flights and ferries are fewer. Check with the Consell Insular de Menorca and with individual businesses before travelling outside the season.
