Sammarinese citizens do not need a visa for short stays in Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa exemption covers the entire Schengen area. A stay is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, family visits or business trips. Always check the latest rules before travelling.
What the status means
San Marino is listed in Annex II of the EU visa regulation. This means Sammarinese passport holders can enter Spain without a visa for short stays. The stay must not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period. The count includes all days spent in any Schengen country.
The exemption applies to all Schengen states. A trip to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera counts towards the 90-day limit. The rules are the same for all Spanish territory. No special conditions apply to Sammarinese citizens.
Before you travel and at the border
Check that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen area. It must have been issued within the previous ten years. Border officers may ask for proof of onward travel, accommodation and sufficient funds.
New EU systems called ETIAS and EES are being introduced. ETIAS will require a travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers. EES will register entry and exit. Check the official EU website at https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ before travelling for current status.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport. To reach Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only; its sights are not covered by this guide.
At the airport or ferry port, have your passport ready. Border checks may be random or systematic. If arriving from a non-Schengen country, expect a full passport check. Keep your travel documents accessible.
