Burmese citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. Apply before you travel. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Plan your application well ahead of your trip.

What the status means

Myanmar is on the EU visa list, so a Schengen short-stay visa is required for any stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, family visits and short business trips. The visa is valid for all Schengen countries, including Spain.

Apply at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. You cannot obtain a visa on arrival in Spain. The decision is made before you travel, so start the process in advance.

Before you travel and at the border

Check your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and was issued within the previous ten years. Carry proof of accommodation, return flights and travel insurance. Border officers may ask to see these documents.

New EU entry systems, ETIAS and EES, are being introduced. Check the official EU travel site before you travel. At the border, your passport and visa will be checked. Keep copies of your documents in a separate place.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive flights from mainland Spain and other European cities. Formentera has no airport. Fly to Ibiza, then take a ferry from the port to La Savina. Ferries run regularly, but timetables change with the season.

Mallorca is a transit point only. If you fly via Palma, you will clear Schengen entry there, as it is part of Spain. Your visa covers the whole Schengen area, so no extra permit is needed for the Balearic Islands. Check ferry and flight schedules before you travel.

Staying longer, working or studying

A short-stay visa does not allow you to work or study. For stays over 90 days, or for work or study, you need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Myanmar before you travel.

The rules for long stays are set by Spanish immigration law. Check the official Spanish consulate website for current requirements. Do not overstay your visa, as this can affect future applications.
