Nepali citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including visits to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Nepal. This page explains what the requirement means in practice, from the application process to arriving on the islands.

What the visa requirement means

Nepali passport holders cannot travel to Spain for short stays without a visa. The Schengen visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. It covers tourism, family visits or business trips. The visa is valid for all Schengen countries, not only Spain.

The visa is a single, double or multiple-entry permit. It is issued by the Spanish consulate in Nepal. The application must be made in the country of residence. Travellers should apply well before the planned departure date.

Before you travel and at the border

Before applying, gather the required documents. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. Travel insurance covering medical emergencies and repatriation is required, with minimum coverage of €30,000.

At the Spanish border, travellers present the passport with the visa sticker. Border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds for the stay. All documents should be printed and ready.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for the Balearic Islands. Formentera has no airport; visitors fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for connecting flights or ferries to the other islands.

The Schengen visa is checked at the first point of entry into the Schengen area. If flying via a Schengen country other than Spain, the visa is checked there. Travellers should carry supporting documents for the entire trip.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, for employment or study, a national visa or residence permit is required. These are applied for at the Spanish consulate in Nepal.

The official Spanish consulate website provides details on long-stay visas and residence permits. Requirements and procedures differ from the short-stay visa. Check before making any plans.
