Rwandan citizens travelling to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera need a Schengen short-stay visa for Spain. Apply at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Plan ahead and check the official EU visa list before booking travel.

What the status means

A Schengen short-stay visa is required for Rwandan citizens entering Spain for tourism, family visits or short business trips. This covers the Balearic Islands, including Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa permits travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The requirement comes from Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, as amended. No special conditions apply to Rwandan citizens. You must apply before departure, as you cannot obtain a visa on arrival in Spain. Check the official EU visa list for the latest status.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. You will need a valid passport, a completed application form, recent photographs, travel insurance and proof of accommodation and funds. The passport must be valid at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years.

At the border, present your passport and visa. Border officers may ask for evidence of your travel plans, accommodation and return ticket. Carry copies of your booking confirmations. New EU systems, such as ETIAS and EES, are being introduced; check travel-europe.europa.eu before travelling for the latest entry requirements.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport. Fly to Ibiza, then take a ferry from the port to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only; you do not need a separate visa for a short stopover if you hold a valid Schengen visa.

When flying from outside the Schengen area, you will clear immigration at your first Spanish airport, such as Ibiza or Menorca. Then travel to the other islands is domestic. Ferries between Ibiza and Formentera run regularly, but schedules change seasonally. Check ferry times before you travel.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow you to work or study in Spain. For stays over 90 days, or for employment or study, you need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence before you travel.

The requirements for national visas and permits differ from short-stay visas. Check the official Spanish consulate website for the correct procedure and documents. Do not overstay your visa, as this can affect future applications. Rules change, so verify the current process before you apply.
