Tanzanian citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including travel to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country of residence.

What the visa means

A Schengen short-stay visa grants entry to Spain and the other Schengen countries for tourism, business or family visits. For the Balearic Islands, the visa covers Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The maximum stay is 90 days in any 180-day period. Overstaying can lead to fines or a ban.

The visa does not permit paid work or study. For those purposes, a national visa or residence permit is required. The visa is valid for the dates and number of entries shown on the sticker. Always check the validity before travel.

Before you travel

Apply for the visa well before the planned trip. The application is submitted to the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in the country where you live. Appointments are usually required. Documents include a valid passport, a completed application form, travel insurance, flight reservations and proof of accommodation.

At the border, immigration officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds for the stay and a return ticket. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. Check the current requirements on the official site.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points by air. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for connecting flights or ferries, not a destination covered by this guide.

Ferry services between the islands operate year-round, though frequencies reduce in winter. No internal border checks exist within Spain, but carry the passport and visa at all times. The visa must be valid for the entire stay in the Schengen area.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow work or study. For paid employment, self-employment or courses longer than 90 days, a national visa or residence permit is needed. Apply at the Spanish consulate before travel.

For information on long-stay visas, residence permits or work authorisation, check the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Spanish consulate. Rules change, so verify the current process before making plans.
