Rules can change: confirm on the official site before you travel. imptbalearic.es is a hotel and travel site; it does not issue visas.
Norwegian citizens are covered by EU/EEA/Swiss free movement rules. They do not need a visa to enter Spain for short stays. A valid passport or national identity card is sufficient. This applies to travel to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. For stays longer than three months, a residence permit or national visa is required.
What the status means
Norwegian citizens can enter Spain without a visa for short stays. The stay can be up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to the whole Schengen area, including the Balearic Islands. A valid passport or national identity card is required at the border. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. It must also have been issued within the previous ten years.
The status is based on Regulation (EU) 2018/1806. Norway is not a third country under this regulation. The rules are the same for all EU/EEA/Swiss citizens. No special conditions apply. Check the official link for the latest version of the regulation before travelling.
Before you travel and at the border
Before travelling, check that your passport or national ID card is valid. For passport holders, the document must be valid for at least three months after your planned departure from the Schengen area. It must also have been issued within the last ten years. National ID cards from Norway are accepted for entry to Spain. No visa is needed.
At the border, you may be asked to show your travel document. You may also be asked to show proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds for the stay. Border guards can ask for these documents. It is advisable to carry them. The rules are the same for all EU/EEA/Swiss citizens.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for those islands. Formentera has no airport. To reach Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Ferries run regularly, but schedules change with the season. Many services stop or reduce frequency from November to April. Check the ferry company for current timetables.
Mallorca is not covered by this site. It can be used as a transit point. Ferries connect Mallorca to Ibiza and Menorca. Flights from Mallorca to Ibiza or Menorca are also available. If you arrive in Mallorca first, you will still be entering the Schengen area there. The same entry rules apply. No additional visa is needed for the onward journey to the other islands.
Staying longer, working or studying
For stays longer than three months, a national visa or residence permit is required. This applies to work, study or any other long-term stay. The rules are set by the Spanish government. Check the official Spanish immigration website for the correct procedure. The process can take time, so apply well in advance.
If you plan to work or study in Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera, you must obtain the correct permit before you start. The rules are the same for all EU/EEA/Swiss citizens. The local authorities can provide guidance. Contact the Spanish consulate in Norway or the immigration office in Spain for details.
