Luxembourgish citizens enjoy free movement within the EU and Schengen area. For Spain, including the Balearic Islands, no visa is required. You can enter with a valid national identity card or passport. This applies to holidays, short stays and transit. Always carry the document you used to enter, and check the latest rules before travelling.

What this means in practice

As a Luxembourgish citizen, you are not a third-country national under EU visa rules. You do not need a visa for Spain, whether you fly to Ibiza or Menorca, or take a ferry to Formentera. The same applies for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area.

Your right to enter is based on EU free movement, not on the visa list. Border checks are minimal, but you must show a valid identity document. The rules are set out in Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, which lists countries whose citizens need a visa. Luxembourg is not on that list.

Before you travel and at the border

Check your identity card or passport is valid for the whole stay. For passport holders, the general Schengen rule applies: the passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure and issued within the previous ten years. An identity card is usually enough for EU citizens.

At the border, present your document to the officer. There are no visa formalities. New EU systems, ETIAS and EES, are being introduced. They may affect how you cross borders. Check the official EU travel website before you travel.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) handle flights from mainland Spain and other EU countries. Formentera has no airport. Fly to Ibiza, then take a ferry from the port to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only; you do not need a visa to change flights there.

Ferry services run between Ibiza and Formentera, and between Mallorca and the other islands. Timetables change with the season. Check the operator's schedule before booking. During winter, some routes run less often. Always confirm current times.

Staying longer, working or studying

If you plan to stay in Spain for more than 90 days, you need to register your presence. This applies to EU citizens. You must also register if you work or study in Spain. The process is handled by the Spanish authorities, not by the airport or border.

For work or study, you may need a national visa or residence permit, depending on your situation. The rules are set by the Spanish government. Check the official Spanish immigration website for current requirements. The Balearic Islands follow the same national rules.
