If you hold a Uruguayan passport, you do not need a visa for short trips to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. You may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to tourism and family visits. Border officials may ask for proof of your plans and funds. Always check the latest rules before you travel.

What the status means

Uruguayan citizens are visa-exempt for short stays in the Schengen area, which includes Spain and the Balearic Islands. You can enter for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is a total across all Schengen countries, not per country. The exemption comes from EU Regulation 2018/1806.

No special conditions apply to Uruguayan passport holders. The visa-free entry covers tourism, family visits and short business trips. You cannot work or study without a separate permit. The 90-day limit is strict; overstaying can lead to fines or entry bans.

Before you travel

Check your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and was issued within the last ten years. Carry proof of your return ticket and accommodation bookings. Have enough money for your stay, though no fixed amount is published.

New EU entry systems, ETIAS and EES, are being introduced. They are not yet in force. Before travelling, check the official EU website at https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ for the latest status and any requirements. Rules can change, so verify before booking.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive direct flights from mainland Spain and some European cities. Formentera has no airport. Fly to Ibiza, then take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Ferries run frequently in summer, less often in winter.

If you transit through Mallorca, you will pass through its airport or port. That is fine, but Mallorca is not covered by this site. Your Schengen stay counts from the moment you enter any Schengen country, including mainland Spain or Mallorca. Keep your boarding passes and ferry tickets as proof of entry and exit.

Staying longer or working

For stays beyond 90 days, or for work or study, you need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Uruguay before you travel. The process is separate from the visa-free entry and takes longer.

Do not overstay your 90-day limit. If you want to extend, you must leave the Schengen area and re-enter only after a new 180-day period. For specific advice, check the official Spanish immigration website or the nearest consulate. Rules for long stays are not covered by this site.

Questions

Do Uruguayan citizens need a visa for Ibiza or Menorca?

No. Uruguayan passport holders can enter Spain and the Balearic Islands without a visa for short stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to tourism and family visits. Always check the latest EU rules before travelling.

Can Uruguayan citizens work in Spain with visa-free entry?

No. Visa-free entry is for short stays only, such as tourism or family visits. Working or studying requires a national visa or residence permit, which you must apply for at a Spanish consulate before arriving. Overstaying or working without a permit is illegal.

How long can a Uruguayan citizen stay in Spain?

You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is the maximum across all Schengen countries, not just Spain. If you stay 90 days, you must leave the Schengen area and wait until a new 180-day period begins before returning.

What documents do Uruguayan citizens need at the border in Spain?

Carry a valid passport, proof of return travel, accommodation bookings, and evidence of sufficient funds. Border officials may ask to see these. Also, check the status of ETIAS and EES on the official EU website before travelling, as these systems are being introduced.

Can a Uruguayan citizen enter Formentera without a visa?

Yes, but Formentera has no airport. You must fly to Ibiza Airport and then take a ferry to La Savina. The visa-free rules apply to the whole Schengen area, so no additional visa is needed for the ferry or the island. Just carry your passport and travel documents.
