Tajik citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Tajikistan. Plan ahead, as appointments and processing take time.

What the status means

Tajikistan is listed in Annex I of the EU Visa Regulation, meaning its nationals must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling to Spain or any other Schengen country. This visa covers tourism, family visits and business trips of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. It is valid for all Schengen states, not just Spain.

The visa is issued as a sticker in the passport. It specifies the period of validity and the number of permitted entries. Overstaying or working without authorisation is not allowed. The rules apply equally to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, as they are part of Spain and the Schengen area.

Before you travel and at the border

Carry the passport with the visa sticker, plus supporting documents such as travel insurance, flight bookings and accommodation confirmations. At the Spanish border, officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds for the stay and the purpose of the visit. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years.

Travellers arriving by air land at Ibiza Airport (IBZ) or Menorca Airport (MAH). Formentera has no airport; visitors fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa or La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for some flights or ferries but is not covered by this guide. Check current entry requirements with Spanish authorities before departure.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) receives flights from mainland Spain and other European cities. Menorca Airport (MAH) serves similar routes. From either airport, taxis, buses and car hire are available. Formentera is reached by ferry from Ibiza; the main ports are Eivissa and La Savina. Ferry timetables and frequencies change seasonally, so check ahead.

The islands have a Mediterranean climate with many businesses closing from roughly November to April. Plan travel and accommodation accordingly. The Schengen visa covers the entire stay across the islands. No additional permits are needed for short visits. Always carry the passport and visa when moving between islands.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment, study or residence, a national visa or residence permit is required. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Tajikistan before travelling. The official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain provides details.

The rules for longer stays are separate from the Schengen visa process. Check the consulate’s requirements for the specific type of visa or permit needed. Overstaying a short-stay visa can lead to fines or a ban from re-entering the Schengen area.
