Pakistani citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including stays on Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera. The visa is obtained before departure from the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Pakistan. Without a valid visa, entry is refused at the border. The visa permits travel across the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

What the visa requirement means

Pakistani passport holders must apply for a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling to Spain. The visa covers visits to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera for tourism, family visits or business. Without it, boarding a flight or ferry to the islands is not possible. The visa is valid for the entire Schengen area, not only Spain.

The application is made at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in Pakistan. Appointments are usually required. The visa is typically valid for a single entry or multiple entries, depending on the applicant's travel history and purpose. Check the consulate's website for current procedures.

Before you travel and at the border

Carry the passport with the valid visa sticker, plus supporting documents such as flight bookings, accommodation confirmations and travel insurance. Border officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds for the stay and the return journey. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years.

At the Spanish border, the officer checks the visa, passport and purpose of travel. The visa does not guarantee entry; the final decision rests with the border authority. Ensure the visa covers the entire period of the planned stay. Overstaying the visa can lead to entry bans.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain or other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Ibiza to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for connecting flights or ferries to the other islands.

When arriving by ferry from Ibiza to Formentera, the same Schengen visa applies. No additional checks are made between the islands as they are part of Spain. Keep the passport and visa accessible during travel. The visa is valid for the entire stay in the Balearic Islands.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, a national visa (type D) or a residence permit is required. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Pakistan before travelling. The rules differ from the short-stay visa.

Check the official site of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate for the correct procedure. The visa application centre can provide guidance. Do not travel on a short-stay visa intending to work or study; entry may be refused.

How to apply

  1. Identify the Spanish consulate or visa centre in Pakistan responsible for the applicant's region.
  2. Book an appointment online or by phone as required by the consulate or visa centre.
  3. Complete the Schengen visa application form and gather all required documents.
  4. Attend the appointment in person to submit the application and provide biometric data (fingerprints and photograph).
  5. Wait for the decision; processing times vary and are not guaranteed.
  6. Collect the passport with the visa sticker once the application is approved.
  7. Travel to Spain and the Balearic Islands within the visa validity period.
