Algerian citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including visits to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Algeria. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Check the official European Union visa list for the current rules.
What the visa requirement means
Algerian passport holders must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera. The visa permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. This applies to tourism, family visits or business trips. Without a valid visa, boarding a flight or ferry to Spain is not permitted.
The visa is issued by the Spanish consulate in Algeria or the visa centre it uses. It is valid for the Schengen area, not only for Spain. Border guards may ask for proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds for the stay. The visa does not grant the right to work or study.
Before you travel and at the border
Apply for the visa well before the planned departure. The application must be submitted in person at the Spanish consulate or visa centre in the country of residence. Documents include a completed application form, a valid passport, recent photographs, travel insurance and proof of accommodation and funds. Check the consulate's website for the exact list.
At the border, present the valid visa, passport and any supporting documents. Border guards may ask about the purpose of the visit and proof of onward or return travel. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points by air. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. The ferry crossing takes about half an hour. Check the ferry schedule as services are reduced outside the main season.
Mallorca is a transit point for some flights and ferries. A Schengen visa issued by Spain allows entry there too. When travelling between the islands, carry the passport and visa. The visa is checked on arrival at each airport or port. Keep the travel itinerary and accommodation details accessible.
Staying longer, working or studying
The Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, a national visa or residence permit is required. Apply for these at the Spanish consulate in Algeria. The process and requirements differ from the short-stay visa.
For information on long-stay visas, residence permits or work authorisation, check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate. The rules change and each case is assessed individually. The visa pages of this site cover only short-stay tourism.
