Congolese (Republic of the Congo) citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country of residence. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, visiting family or business.
What the visa requirement means
A Schengen short-stay visa is a standard requirement for Congolese (Republic of the Congo) passport holders travelling to Spain for tourism, visiting family or business. The visa permits entry to all Schengen area countries, including Spain and the Balearic Islands. The maximum stay is 90 days in any 180-day period. Overstaying can lead to fines or a ban from re-entering the Schengen area.
The visa does not allow paid work. For employment, study or long-term stays, a separate national visa or residence permit is needed. The visa is valid for the dates and number of entries specified on the sticker. Always check the validity before travelling.
Before you travel and at the border
Apply well in advance of the planned trip. The application is submitted at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country where the applicant legally resides. Appointments are often required. The consulate may ask for a travel itinerary, proof of accommodation, flight bookings, travel insurance and evidence of sufficient funds.
At the Spanish border, travellers must present a valid passport and the visa sticker. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and must have been issued within the previous ten years. Border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, return tickets and travel insurance.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport. Visitors fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa or from Playa d'en Bossa to La Savina. The ferry crossing takes about 30 minutes.
Mallorca is a common transit point for flights and ferries to the other islands. A Schengen visa valid for Spain allows entry to Mallorca as part of the same trip. The visa must be obtained before travelling. Check the official Spanish consulate website for the latest entry requirements.
Staying longer, working or studying
A Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. For paid employment, self-employment, study or long-term residence, a national visa or residence permit is required. These are applied for at the Spanish consulate in the country of residence before travelling.
The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website provides details on the different visa types and the documents required. Processing times and fees vary. Always check the official site for the most current information. The site imptbalearic.es does not issue visas.
