Tongan citizens holding a valid passport can travel to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, without a visa for short stays. The stay must not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, visiting family or business trips. Travel is permitted across the Schengen area, which includes Spain. Always check the latest rules before departure, as entry conditions can change.

What the status means

Tonga is listed in Annex II of the EU visa regulation, meaning its citizens are exempt from the short-stay visa requirement for Spain and the rest of the Schengen area. The exemption allows stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This covers holidays, family visits and short business trips. It does not permit paid work or long-term residence.

The visa exemption applies to all Schengen member states. A Tongan traveller can move freely between Spain, France, Germany and other Schengen countries during the same trip, as long as the total stay does not exceed the 90-day limit. Border guards may ask for proof of the purpose of the visit and sufficient funds.

Before you travel and at the border

Before travelling, check that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area and was issued within the past ten years. No visa is needed, but you may be asked to show a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation and evidence of sufficient funds for the stay.

At the border, a passport stamp will be applied on entry and exit. The new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is being introduced, which will record entries and exits electronically. Also, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is planned for visa-exempt travellers. Check the official EU travel website for the latest updates before your trip.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive flights from mainland Spain and other European cities. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Ibiza to La Savina. Mallorca is a common transit point for connecting flights or ferries to the other islands.

From the airport or port, proceed to your accommodation. Public buses, taxis and car hire are available at Ibiza and Menorca airports. Ferry services between the islands run regularly, but timetables change seasonally. Check the official port authority websites for current schedules.

Staying longer, working or studying

The visa-free stay is for short visits only. To stay longer than 90 days, or to work or study in Spain, a national visa or residence permit is required. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Tonga or the nearest consulate in a neighbouring country before travelling.

For study purposes, a student visa is needed for courses longer than 90 days. For work, a work permit and visa must be arranged in advance. Check the official Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for the full list of requirements and application procedures.
