Somali citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including visits to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country where you legally reside. Plan ahead, as appointments and processing take time.
What the visa requirement means
Somali passport holders cannot enter Spain, or any other Schengen country, without a valid visa for short stays. This applies to holidays, family visits, business trips or any stay under 90 days. The visa is issued for the entire Schengen area, so you can travel between member states freely during its validity.
The requirement is set by EU Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, which lists Somalia in Annex I – the countries whose nationals must hold a visa. No special exemptions or simplified procedures apply to Somali citizens. Each application is assessed individually by the consulate.
Before you travel and at the border
Apply well before your planned departure. You must submit your application at the Spanish consulate or the authorised visa centre in your country of residence. Appointments are usually required. The consulate may ask for an interview. Biometric data (fingerprints and a photograph) are collected as part of the application.
At the Spanish border, you may be asked to show your passport, the visa sticker, proof of accommodation, return or onward tickets, and evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. Border guards have the right to refuse entry even with a valid visa if they are not satisfied with the documents or purpose of visit.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for the Balearic Islands. Formentera has no airport; you must fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca is not covered by this site but is a common transit point via Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) for connecting flights or ferries.
When flying via Mallorca, you clear Schengen entry at the first airport you land at in the Schengen area. If you arrive in Mallorca first, that is where passport control happens. From there, travel to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera is a domestic movement with no further border checks.
Staying longer, working or studying
The Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. If you plan to work, study, or stay longer than 90 days, you need a national visa (long-stay visa) or a residence permit from Spain. These are applied for at the Spanish consulate and have different requirements and processing times.
For information on long-stay visas, residence permits or other immigration procedures, consult the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate in your country. Rules and requirements change, so always check the latest guidance before making any plans.

Questions
Do Somali citizens need a visa for Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera?
Yes. Somalia is on the EU visa list, so a Schengen short-stay visa is required for any visit to Spain, including the Balearic Islands. Apply at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence.
Can Somali citizens apply for a visa at the border in Spain?
No. Schengen visas cannot be obtained at the border. You must apply and receive the visa before travelling to Spain. Plan and apply well in advance through the consulate or visa centre.
How long can Somali passport holders stay in Spain with a Schengen visa?
The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. The exact duration is printed on the visa sticker. Overstaying can lead to penalties or future visa refusals.
What is the first step to apply for a Spain visa from Somalia?
Contact the Spanish consulate or the visa centre that handles applications in your country of residence. Check their website for appointment availability, required documents and any specific instructions for Somali applicants.
Are there any new EU entry systems Somali travellers should know about?
The EU is introducing the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). These are not yet in operation. Check https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ before travelling for the latest updates.
Can Somali citizens travel to Mallorca with the same visa?
Yes. The Schengen visa is valid for all Schengen countries, including Spain and its islands. Mallorca is part of Spain, so the same visa covers a visit there, but this site only covers Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera.
