Tunisian citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa to travel to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera for tourism or a short visit. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in Tunisia. It permits a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Plan ahead and check the official site for current procedures.

What the visa means

The Schengen short-stay visa allows a Tunisian citizen to enter Spain and the other Schengen countries for tourism, family visits or business trips. The stay is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa is normally valid for the whole Schengen area, not just the Balearic Islands.

The visa does not permit paid work or study. For those purposes a different permit is needed. The visa is issued by the Spanish consulate in Tunisia or the visa centre it designates. Each application is assessed individually.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply for the visa well ahead of the planned trip. The consulate or visa centre will ask for the completed form, a valid passport, recent photographs, travel insurance, flight and accommodation details, and proof of funds. Border officers may ask to see these documents on arrival.

The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and must have been issued within the previous ten years. Check the official site for any changes to document requirements before you travel.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for the Balearic Islands. Formentera has no airport. To reach Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for ferries or flights between the islands.

At the airport or ferry port, present the passport with the valid Schengen visa. Border officers may check the purpose of the visit and the documents submitted with the visa application. Keep copies of travel and accommodation bookings handy.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not cover long-term stays, paid work or formal study. For these purposes a national visa or a residence permit is required. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Tunisia before travelling.

Check the official site of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate for the specific requirements. Rules and procedures can change, so always confirm the current process before making plans.
