If you hold an Ivorian passport, you need a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Apply before you travel at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. Plan ahead, as appointments and processing take time.

What the status means

Côte d'Ivoire is on the Schengen visa list. This means Ivorian citizens cannot travel to Spain without a visa for short stays. The visa covers tourism, family visits and business trips up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The visa is valid for the whole Schengen area, so you can move between Spain and other Schengen countries. For the Balearic Islands, the same visa applies. There are no special conditions for Ivorian citizens beyond the standard requirements.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply for the visa at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. You must submit your application before you travel. Check the consulate's website for the exact procedure and required documents.

At the border, have your passport and visa ready. Border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds. Keep copies of your bookings and travel insurance. New EU systems, ETIAS and EES, are being introduced; check travel-europe.europa.eu before travelling.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for the Balearic Islands. Flights from mainland Spain and other European cities land here. Formentera has no airport; you fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port to La Savina.

Mallorca is a transit point only. If you land in Mallorca, you will clear Schengen entry there, then take a domestic flight or ferry to Ibiza or Menorca. Your Schengen visa covers the whole journey. Always check current entry rules with the Spanish consulate before you travel.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow you to work or study in Spain. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, you need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate before you travel.

The requirements for national visas differ from the short-stay visa. Check the official Spanish consulate website for the correct application process. Do not arrive as a tourist and then try to change status; it is not possible.

How to apply

  1. Check which Spanish consulate or visa centre covers your place of residence.
  2. Book an appointment at the consulate or visa centre.
  3. Prepare your documents: passport, application form, photos, travel insurance, proof of funds.
  4. Attend the appointment and submit your biometrics (fingerprints and photo).
  5. Wait for the decision; do not book non-refundable travel until you have the visa.
  6. Collect your passport with the visa, or have it delivered.
