Kenyan citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including visits to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country of residence. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Check the official EU visa list for the current status.

What the visa means in practice

A Schengen short-stay visa permits travel to all Schengen member states, including Spain and its Balearic Islands. For a trip to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera, the visa is issued by the Spanish authorities. The visa is valid for tourism, visiting family or friends, or business meetings. It does not allow paid work or study.

The visa is typically valid for the dates stated on the sticker. Travel within the Schengen area is free, but the main destination must be Spain. If visiting multiple Schengen countries, apply at the embassy of the country where the most days are spent. The visa must be used before it expires.

Before you travel and at the border

Before applying, gather the required documents and book an appointment at the Spanish consulate or visa centre in the country of residence. The application should be submitted no earlier than six months before the trip. Border control may ask for proof of accommodation, return flights, travel insurance and sufficient funds.

At the border, present a valid passport and the visa sticker. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. Border officers may ask for the purpose of the visit and the itinerary. Keep copies of all documents.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for those islands. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa or La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for connecting flights or ferries to the other islands.

When arriving at Ibiza or Menorca airport, proceed through passport control. The visa is checked at the first Schengen entry point. For ferry travel from Ibiza to Formentera, no additional border check is required as both are within Spain. Keep the passport and visa accessible during travel.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, a national visa or residence permit is required. Apply at the Spanish consulate before travelling. The official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides details.

For work, a work visa or permit is needed, often sponsored by an employer. For study, a student visa is required for courses longer than 90 days. For residence, a non-lucrative visa or other long-stay visa may apply. Check the official Spanish government site for the current requirements.

How to apply

  1. Determine the Spanish consulate or visa centre for the country of residence.
  2. Book an appointment for the visa application.
  3. Prepare the required documents, including a completed application form.
  4. Attend the appointment to submit documents and give biometric data.
  5. Wait for the visa decision; do not book non-refundable travel before approval.
  6. Collect the passport with the visa sticker once issued.
  7. Travel to Spain within the visa validity dates.
