Rules can change: confirm on the official site before you travel. imptbalearic.es is a hotel and travel site; it does not issue visas.
New Zealander citizens can travel to Spain, including the islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, without a visa for short stays. The visit must not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. This applies to tourism, family visits or business meetings. Before travelling, check the official EU travel site for updates on entry systems and requirements.
What the visa exemption means
New Zealander citizens are visa-exempt for short stays in Spain and the Schengen area. This means no visa is needed for trips of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The 180-day window is counted backwards from each day of stay. The exemption covers all purposes such as tourism, visiting family or attending business meetings.
The status is set by EU Regulation 2018/1806. No special conditions apply to New Zealand. The rule applies across all Schengen countries, so time spent in other Schengen states counts towards the 90-day limit. Keep track of days spent in the area to avoid overstaying.
Before you travel and at the border
Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area. It must have been issued within the previous ten years. Border officials may ask for proof of onward or return travel, accommodation bookings and sufficient funds for the stay.
New EU entry systems are being introduced. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) and the Entry/Exit System (EES) will affect how travellers enter. Check the official EU travel site at https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ for the latest information before your trip.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points by air. Formentera has no airport. To reach Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Ferries run regularly, but services reduce outside the main season from roughly November to April.
Mallorca is not covered by this site. It may be used as a transit point for flights or ferries to the other islands. If you enter the Schengen area via Mallorca, the 90-day limit still applies from that day. Always carry your passport and any requested documents when moving between islands.
Staying longer, working or studying
A visa-free stay cannot be extended beyond 90 days. If you wish to stay longer, work or study, you must apply for a national visa or residence permit before travelling. Contact the Spanish consulate or embassy in New Zealand for the correct procedure.
Check the official site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain or the nearest Spanish consulate for current requirements. Rules for longer stays are separate from the short-stay visa exemption. Do not assume the visa-free status covers work or study.
