Basotho citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa for tourism in Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in Lesotho. Plan ahead, as appointments and processing take time.

What the visa status means

Lesotho is listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, meaning its nationals must hold a visa for short stays in the Schengen area. This applies to all tourism, family visits or business trips to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera. The visa is valid for the entire Schengen zone, not just Spain.

Without a valid visa, border authorities will deny entry. The visa does not permit work or study. Overstaying the 90-day limit can lead to fines, deportation or a ban from re-entering Schengen countries. Always respect the permitted duration.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply for the visa well before your planned departure. The Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Lesotho handles applications. You must submit documents in person, including a completed form, passport, travel insurance and proof of accommodation. Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are taken at the appointment.

At the Spanish border, present your passport and the visa sticker. Border officers may ask for proof of return or onward travel, sufficient funds for your stay and accommodation details. Carry printed copies of your flight and hotel bookings. The visa does not guarantee entry; the final decision rests with the border officer.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain or other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport; fly to Ibiza, then take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only for connecting flights or ferries to the other islands.

From Ibiza Airport, taxis and buses serve the main towns. On Menorca, buses connect the airport to Maó and Ciutadella. Ferries to Formentera run year-round, though frequency drops in winter. Check the current ferry schedule before travelling. The visa covers the entire stay across the islands.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow work or study. For stays exceeding 90 days, or for employment or academic courses, apply for a national visa (type D) or a residence permit. These are handled by the Spanish consulate in Lesotho, not through the visa centre.

Requirements for a national visa differ from the short-stay visa. You will need a job offer, university acceptance or family reunification documents. Processing times are longer. Check the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain for current procedures and fees.
