How the island divides

Four coasts, and a lot of protected land.

Ibiza is about 40 km end to end. The distances are short, but each coast keeps different hours, and large parts of the south and west are natural parks.

01

West: the sunset side

Sant Antoni bay, Cala Comte and Cala d'Hort all face the evening sun. People gather on the rocks well before sunset, and the bay fills with boats in summer.

Cala d'Hort sits inside a natural park with Es Vedrà offshore, so building there is limited and most visitors drive in for the day.

02

South: salt, sand and the town

Ibiza Town, Playa d'en Bossa and the airport are all in the south, along with Ses Salines Natural Park. It is the shortest transfer and the busiest coast.

The park protects the salt pans, the dunes and the sea between Ibiza and Formentera. Some beach car parks are limited or paid in summer.

03

East: mornings and markets

Santa Eulària and Es Canar get the sunrise over the water and have calmer family beaches. Evenings are slower than in the south.

The river at Santa Eulària is one of the few on the Balearics, and the hippy markets run in season.

04

North: pine and quiet

Portinatx and Cala Sant Vicent are the furthest from the airport, with smaller bays, cliffs and pine forest down to the water.

This is the greenest part of the island. Roads are narrow and buses less frequent, so a car or a stay near the beach makes sense.

Questions people ask.

Which area is closest to the airport?

Ses Salines, Playa d'en Bossa and Ibiza Town are all within about 10 km in a straight line.

Where should I stay for sunsets?

The west coast: Sant Antoni, Cala Comte or Cala d'Hort.

Which area is quietest?

The north, around Portinatx and Cala Sant Vicent, and Formentera.

Are the distances driving distances?

No. They are straight lines from Ibiza Airport, computed from published coordinates. Roads add some distance.

Can I stay inside a natural park?

There are few places to stay inside the parks themselves. Most people base themselves nearby and visit by day.

How do Ibiza's five municipalities differ?

Ibiza has five municipalities: Eivissa, Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Sant Antoni de Portmany, Santa Eulària des Riu and Sant Joan de Labritja. Eivissa covers the capital and Dalt Vila; Sant Josep the south-west and airport; Sant Antoni the west coast; Santa Eulària the east and north-east; Sant Joan the rural north. Boundaries matter for buses, parking and natural park rules.

Which areas make up the UNESCO World Heritage site?

The listing, made in 1999, covers the posidonia meadows and coastal ecosystems between Ibiza and Formentera, the fortified upper town of Dalt Vila in Eivissa, the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta and the Puig des Molins necropolis. Dalt Vila sits above the port; Sa Caleta and Puig des Molins lie in the south and near Ibiza Town. Some sites have restricted access; check the Consell d'Eivissa.

Can you reach the different areas by bus?

Buses link Ibiza Airport with Ibiza Town, Sant Antoni, Santa Eulària and the south beaches; more lines run in summer. Away from these routes, services are thinner and many seasonal buses stop roughly from November to April. Check the island bus operator for current routes and timetables before planning an area without a car.

Which areas border the Ses Salines Natural Park?

The park covers the south of Ibiza, the north of Formentera and the sea between, and salt is still harvested there. On Ibiza, the protected area reaches the south coast and the land around the salt pans, close to Sant Josep de sa Talaia and Eivissa. Access and parking can be limited in summer; check the natural park office.
