South Sudanese citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa for tourism or business visits to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in the applicant's country of residence.

What the status means

South Sudan is listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, meaning its citizens must obtain a visa before travelling to Spain or any Schengen country. This applies to short stays for tourism, family visits or business. The visa is valid for the entire Schengen area, so a holder can also visit other member states during the same trip.

The visa does not permit work or study. For those purposes, a separate national visa or residence permit is required. The standard maximum stay is 90 days within any 180-day period. Overstaying can lead to penalties or future visa refusals.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply well in advance at the Spanish consulate or visa centre in your country of residence. The application requires a completed form, a valid passport, recent photographs, travel insurance, proof of accommodation and return flights, and evidence of sufficient funds. Biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) are collected at the appointment.

At the Spanish border, present the visa and supporting documents. Border officers may ask for proof of the purpose of the visit, accommodation and return travel. The visa must be valid for the entire stay. Check that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and was issued within the previous ten years.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain and other European cities. Formentera has no airport; reach it by ferry from Ibiza. Ferries run from Ibiza Town to La Savina, and from other ports in Ibiza. Mallorca is a common transit hub for flights and ferries to the other islands.

When flying via Mallorca, you clear Schengen entry there if arriving from outside the area. On arrival at Ibiza or Menorca, present your visa and passport. Keep copies of your travel documents and accommodation details. Many businesses on the islands close from roughly November to April, so plan accordingly.

Staying longer, working or studying

The Schengen short-stay visa does not allow work or study. For employment, study or long-term residence, apply for a national visa (type D) or a residence permit from the Spanish consulate before travelling. Requirements vary by purpose and are set by Spanish immigration law.

Check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate for current procedures. The site imptbalearic.es is a travel guide and does not issue visas. Always confirm rules with the relevant authorities before making travel plans.
