If you hold a Zimbabwean passport, you need a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism or a short visit. This applies to the Balearic Islands, including Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. You must apply before you travel, at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. The visa allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area.

What the status means

Zimbabwean citizens are on the Schengen visa-required list. You cannot enter Spain or the other Schengen countries without a valid short-stay visa. The visa is for tourism, family visits or business trips of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The visa is issued for the whole Schengen area, but you should apply at the Spanish consulate if Spain is your main destination. For the Balearic Islands, the visa covers Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. Check the visa sticker for the number of entries and validity.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply well in advance at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. You will need to provide your passport, application form, photo, travel insurance, proof of accommodation and return flight, and evidence of funds. Biometric data are taken at the appointment.

At the border, carry the documents you submitted with your visa application. Border officers may ask to see proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds. They may also check that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and was issued within the previous ten years.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for those islands. Formentera has no airport. You fly to Ibiza and then take a ferry from the port to La Savina. Ferries run regularly, but schedules change by season.

Mallorca is a transit point only. You may fly there and then take a connecting flight or ferry to the other islands. The Schengen visa covers the entire stay in Spain, so a stopover in Mallorca is fine. Check the ferry or flight times before you travel.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow you to work or study in Spain. For stays beyond 90 days, or for employment or study, you need a national visa or a residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence before you travel.

The requirements for national visas and residence permits differ from the short-stay visa. They depend on your purpose, such as work, study or family reunion. Check the official Spanish immigration website for the current process and documents needed.

How to apply

  1. Check if the Spanish consulate in your country of residence handles visa applications directly or uses a visa centre.
  2. Book an appointment at the consulate or visa centre for your Schengen visa application.
  3. Prepare the required documents, including passport, application form, photo, travel insurance, itinerary and proof of funds.
  4. Attend the appointment to submit your application and provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo).
  5. Wait for the visa decision; the consulate may contact you for additional information.
  6. If approved, collect your passport with the visa sticker and check the dates and number of entries.
  7. Travel to Spain, carrying the same documents you used for the application.
