Rules can change: confirm on the official site before you travel. imptbalearic.es is a hotel and travel site; it does not issue visas.
Bulgarian citizens enjoy EU free movement rights and do not need a visa to enter Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. Travel is permitted with a valid national identity card or passport. The same rules apply for short stays, transit and visits to the islands. Always carry the document used for entry when travelling between the islands or to mainland Spain.
What the status means in practice
As an EU citizen, you can enter Spain without a visa and stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without registering. The 90-day count applies across the whole Schengen area. For longer stays, you must register with the authorities. The status covers tourism, family visits and business meetings, but not paid work or study without additional permits.
The same rules apply to all Spanish territory, including Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. You may travel freely between the islands and to mainland Spain. No entry stamp is normally required when using an identity card. If using a passport, border officers may stamp it on entry.
Before you travel and at the border
Carry a valid Bulgarian identity card or passport. The document must be valid on the day of travel. For passport holders, the general Schengen rule applies: the passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen area and must have been issued within the previous ten years. No visa application is needed.
At the border, you may be asked to show your travel document and explain the purpose of your visit. Proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds may be requested, though checks are usually light for EU citizens. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) are new systems being introduced. Check https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ before travelling for the latest updates.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for those islands. Formentera has no airport. To reach Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Ferries run year-round, though services are less frequent from November to April. Mallorca appears only as a transit point for connecting flights or ferries to the other islands.
When flying from Bulgaria, you may arrive directly at Ibiza or Menorca during the summer season, or via a connection in mainland Spain or Mallorca. For ferry travel between the islands, carry the same identity document used for entry. No additional checks are made for domestic sea crossings, but keep your document accessible.
Staying longer, working or studying
If you plan to stay in Spain for more than 90 days, you must register your presence with the local authorities. For Ibiza, register at the Oficina de Extranjería in Eivissa. For Menorca, go to the Oficina de Extranjería in Maó. For Formentera, the Consell de Formentera can advise on the process. Registration is free and grants a certificate of registration as an EU citizen.
To work or study in Spain, you need a national visa or residence permit unless you are self-employed or employed under EU free movement rules. Check the official Spanish government site for the specific requirements. The Consell d'Eivissa and Consell Insular de Menorca provide local guidance, but the final decision rests with the national authorities.
