Nigerian citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including visits to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Nigeria. This page explains the process and what to expect when travelling to the Balearic Islands.

What the visa status means

Nigerian passport holders must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling to Spain. This visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. The visa covers tourism, family visits and business trips. It does not permit paid work or long-term residence.

The visa is issued by the Spanish consulate in Nigeria or by the visa centre it contracts. Applications must be submitted in person. The visa is valid for entry to all Schengen countries, but the main destination should be Spain. For travel to the Balearic Islands, the visa is the same as for mainland Spain.

Before you travel and at the border

Two new EU systems are being introduced: the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). Check the official EU travel website before travelling for updates on how these may affect entry procedures.

The visa is valid for the Schengen area, so a separate visa is not needed for each island. However, travel between the islands is by ferry or domestic flight, and the same visa applies.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for those islands. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Ibiza to La Savina. The ferry journey takes about half an hour. The visa is checked on arrival at the airport in Ibiza or Menorca.

Mallorca is not covered by this site. It can be used as a transit point for flights or ferries to the other islands. A Schengen visa is valid for transit through Mallorca. When travelling between islands, carry the passport and visa at all times, as inter-island ferries may have document checks.

Staying longer, working or studying

The Schengen short-stay visa does not permit paid work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, a national visa or residence permit is required. These are applied for at the Spanish consulate in Nigeria before travel. The process and requirements differ from the short-stay visa.

For work, a work permit is usually needed, sponsored by the employer in Spain. For study, a student visa is required, with proof of enrolment at a recognised institution. Check the official website of the Spanish consulate or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for current requirements. The Balearic Islands follow the same national rules.

How to apply

  1. Check the official Spanish consulate or visa centre website for the application form.
  2. Book an appointment at the consulate or visa centre in Nigeria.
  3. Gather all required documents, including passport, photos and travel insurance.
  4. Attend the appointment to submit the application and provide biometric data.
  5. Wait for the visa decision; do not book non-refundable travel until approved.
  6. Collect the passport with the visa or have it delivered if the service is available.
