Sierra Leonean citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in the country of residence. This page explains the process for a trip to the islands. The site does not issue visas.
What the status means
Sierra Leone is listed on Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, meaning its nationals must hold a visa for short stays in the Schengen area. A Schengen visa permits travel to Spain and other Schengen states for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business or family visits.
The visa is valid for the entire Schengen zone, so a holder can also visit other member countries during the same trip. The visa does not permit paid work or study. Travel to the Balearic Islands is treated as travel to mainland Spain for visa purposes.
Before you travel and at the border
Apply for the visa well before the planned departure. The application is submitted at the Spanish consulate or visa centre in the country where you legally reside. You must provide proof of residence. Border officers may ask for return tickets, accommodation bookings and evidence of sufficient funds for the stay.
At the Spanish border, present a valid passport issued within the previous ten years and valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. The visa must be affixed in the passport. Check the entry conditions with the consulate before travelling.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport. Visitors fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for connecting flights or ferries.
On arrival at any island port or airport, present the passport with the valid Schengen visa. Border checks are routine. The visa allows free movement within the Schengen area during its validity, so island-hopping between Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera is straightforward.
Staying longer, working or studying
A Schengen short-stay visa does not cover stays longer than 90 days in any 180-day period. For a longer stay, apply for a national visa (type D) or a residence permit from the Spanish consulate. These are for work, study, family reunification or other long-term purposes.
Working or studying on a short-stay visa is not permitted. For employment or academic courses, the correct authorisation must be obtained before travel. Check the official Spanish consulate website for the specific requirements and application process for national visas.
