Samoan citizens can travel to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, without a visa for short stays. The visit is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies to tourism, family visits or business meetings. Travel to Formentera requires flying to Ibiza and taking a ferry from La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for ferries or flights.

What the visa exemption means

Samoan passport holders do not need a visa to enter Spain for short stays. The stay cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. This includes time spent in Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera. The rule applies to tourism, visiting family or attending business meetings. Travel for other purposes may require a visa.

The visa exemption is based on EU Regulation 2018/1806. No special conditions apply to Samoan citizens. The status is the same for all Schengen countries. A short stay covers the Balearic Islands as part of Spain. Check the official EU link for the latest version of the regulation before travelling.

Before you travel and at the border

Ensure the passport is valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen area. The passport must have been issued within the previous ten years. At the border, a border guard may ask for proof of the purpose of the visit, return tickets and accommodation details. Carry documents to show sufficient funds for the stay.

The EU is introducing two new systems: the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). EES will register entry and exit at the external border. ETIAS will require a travel authorisation before travel. Check the official EU travel website for the current status and start dates before booking.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for the islands. Formentera has no airport. To reach Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for connecting flights or ferries. All airports and ports are within the Schengen area, so no additional border checks apply between islands.

At the airport or port, present the passport and any requested documents. The border guard may stamp the passport on entry and exit. Keep the entry stamp as proof of the date of arrival. The 90-day count starts from the first day in the Schengen area. For trips that include other Schengen countries, count all days spent in the zone.

Staying longer, working or studying

The visa exemption does not cover stays longer than 90 days in any 180-day period. For longer stays, a national visa or residence permit is required. This applies to work, study or family reunification. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Samoa or the nearest Schengen embassy before travelling. The process is separate from the short-stay rules.

Working or studying without the correct permit is not allowed under the visa exemption. Check the official Spanish immigration website for the specific requirements. The visa rules for the Balearic Islands are the same as for mainland Spain. For up-to-date information, consult the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the EU official link.
