Ethiopian citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to travel to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Ethiopia. This page explains what the requirement means in practice, how to prepare, and what to expect on arrival.

What the visa requirement means

A Schengen short-stay visa allows Ethiopian citizens to stay in the Schengen area, which includes Spain and the Balearic Islands, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa is for tourism, visiting family or short business trips. It does not permit work or study.

The visa is issued by Spain if Spain is the main destination or the first point of entry. For travel to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera, the visa application is made at the Spanish consulate in Ethiopia. The visa is valid for all Schengen countries.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply well before your planned departure. The consulate or visa centre provides the application form and list of required documents. You must attend an appointment in person to submit biometric data (fingerprints and photograph).

At the border, Spanish border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, return or onward tickets, travel insurance and sufficient funds for the stay. Carry printed copies of your visa, passport and supporting documents. Rules change, so check the official Spanish consulate website before travelling.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for the Balearic Islands. Formentera has no airport; you fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Ibiza to La Savina. The visa is checked on arrival at the first Schengen airport.

If you transit through Mallorca (PMI) on a flight from Ethiopia or another Schengen country, you clear immigration there. The same Schengen visa applies. The islands are all part of Spain, so no additional permit is needed for travel between them.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, you need a national visa (type D) or a residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Ethiopia before travelling.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website provides details on long-stay visas and permits. Rules are subject to change, so always check the official site. The visa pages of this site do not issue visas and cannot advise on individual cases.
