Central African Republic passport holders require a Schengen short-stay visa for tourism or business trips to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the applicant's country of residence.

What the visa requirement means

Central African citizens must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling to Spain. This applies to visits to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera for tourism, family visits or business. The visa permits travel across the Schengen area, which includes Spain, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The visa is not a guarantee of entry. Border officers at the port of entry may ask for proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds for the stay. All conditions are checked on arrival.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply for the visa well ahead of your planned travel date. The application is submitted at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in your country of residence. You must provide a completed application form, a valid passport, recent photographs, travel insurance and evidence of accommodation and funds.

At the border, present your passport with the visa sticker and any supporting documents requested. Border police may ask about the purpose and length of your stay. Keep copies of your flight bookings and hotel confirmations handy.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for the Balearic Islands. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Ibiza to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only for connecting flights or ferries to the other islands.

When arriving by air or sea, have your passport and visa ready for inspection. The visa must be valid for the entire stay. If you plan to visit more than one Schengen country, apply at the consulate of the country where you will spend the most time.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, you need a national visa (long-stay visa) or a residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence before travelling.

Check the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain for the full list of requirements. Rules and procedures can change, so confirm the latest details before you apply.
