Iraqi citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain, including the islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, family visits or business. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country where you live. Plan ahead and check the official requirements before you travel.
What the visa means in practice
A Schengen short-stay visa issued by Spain permits travel across the Schengen area, which includes mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. For a trip to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera, the visa covers the entire stay as long as Spain is the main destination. The visa is valid for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, return flights and sufficient funds for the stay.
The visa does not permit paid work or long-term study. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, work or study, you need a different type of visa or a residence permit. The rules are set by the Spanish government and the Schengen area. Check the official Spanish consular website for the most current information before applying.
Before you travel and at the border
Apply for the visa well before your planned departure. The application is made in person at the Spanish consulate or visa centre in your country of residence. You will need a completed application form, a valid passport, recent photographs, travel insurance, flight reservations and proof of accommodation. The consulate may ask for additional documents such as bank statements or an employment letter.
At the border, present your passport with the valid visa, return or onward tickets and evidence of where you will stay. Border officers may ask about the purpose of your visit and your funds. The Schengen area has no internal border checks, but you may be checked on arrival in Spain. Carry copies of your documents.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport. To reach Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. The ferry crossing takes about 30 minutes. Check ferry schedules, as they change by season.
If you transit through Mallorca, you remain within the Schengen area and do not clear additional border checks. The visa covers the entire journey as long as you enter through Spain. Keep your passport and visa accessible during travel. From November to April, some ferry services and tourist facilities on the islands reduce hours or close.
Staying longer, working or studying
A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow you to work or study for longer than 90 days. If you intend to work, study or live in Spain for more than 90 days, you must apply for a national visa (type D) or a residence permit before you travel. These applications are made at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence.
The requirements for a national visa or residence permit differ from the short-stay visa. Check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate for the correct procedure. The rules are set by Spanish immigration law and may change. Do not overstay your visa, as this can affect future travel to the Schengen area.
