Burkinabe citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in the country of residence. This page explains the process for a tourist visit to the islands.

What the visa means

A Schengen short-stay visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area, which includes Spain and the Balearic Islands. The visa is for tourism, family visits or business trips. It does not permit paid work or study beyond short courses.

The visa is usually valid for one or multiple entries. Check the validity dates on the visa sticker. Overstaying may affect future applications. Always carry a copy of the visa and travel documents while on the islands.

Before you travel

Apply at the Spanish consulate or visa centre in the country where you legally reside. The application must be submitted at least 15 days before travel and no earlier than six months before the trip. Appointments are often required; book early.

Documents include a completed application form, a valid passport (issued within the past ten years and valid at least three months beyond the planned departure from Schengen), travel insurance, flight itinerary and proof of accommodation. The consulate may request additional evidence of funds or ties to the home country.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main points of entry for flights from mainland Spain or other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport; take a ferry from Ibiza to La Savina. Mallorca may be used as a transit point for connecting flights or ferries.

At the border, present the passport with the valid visa. Border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds. Keep copies of all documents. The visa does not guarantee entry; the final decision rests with the border authority.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not cover long-term stays, paid work or full-time study. For stays exceeding 90 days, apply for a national visa (type D) or a residence permit from the Spanish consulate before travel.

For work or study, the employer or educational institution in Spain must often sponsor the application. Check the official Spanish government visa website for current requirements. The process can take several months; plan well ahead.

How to apply

  1. Determine the Spanish consulate or visa centre covering your country of residence.
  2. Book an appointment; slots may be limited, so do this early.
  3. Complete the Schengen visa application form and gather all required documents.
  4. Attend the appointment in person to submit documents and provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo).
  5. Wait for the visa decision; do not book non-refundable travel until the visa is issued.
  6. Collect the passport with the visa sticker or have it delivered if the service is available.
  7. Travel to Spain and the Balearic Islands within the visa validity period.
