Afghan citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain for tourism, including visits to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa permits a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in the country of residence. Check the official link for the full regulation.
What the visa means
The Schengen short-stay visa allows Afghan citizens to travel to Spain and other Schengen countries for tourism, business or family visits. It covers stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa is valid for the entire Schengen area, so travel between Spain and other member states is permitted within the visa's validity.
For the Balearic Islands, the visa grants entry to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. Formentera has no airport; visitors fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Ibiza to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point for ferries and flights but is not covered by this site.
Before you travel and at the border
Apply for the visa well before your planned departure. The application is lodged at the Spanish consulate or visa centre in your country of residence. Border control may ask for proof of accommodation, return flights and sufficient funds for the stay. Travel insurance covering medical emergencies and repatriation is required for the Schengen area.
At the border, present a valid passport issued within the previous ten years and valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. The visa in your passport must cover the dates of travel. Check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for any changes to entry requirements.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for those flying directly from mainland Spain or other Schengen countries. For Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Ibiza to La Savina. The ferry journey takes roughly 30 minutes. No direct flights to Formentera exist.
Mallorca serves as a transit point for connecting flights or ferries to Ibiza or Menorca. When transiting through Mallorca, the Schengen visa remains valid as long as the stay in the Schengen area does not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period. Ensure your visa covers the entire duration of travel.
Staying longer, working or studying
The Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study purposes, a national visa or residence permit is required. These applications are made at the Spanish consulate in the country of residence and are subject to different rules.
Check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs for information on long-stay visas and residence permits. The Consell d'Eivissa and Consell Insular de Menorca provide local information for residents but do not issue visas. For Formentera, the Consell de Formentera offers similar guidance.
