Kazakh citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is applied for at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in Kazakhstan. A visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Plan ahead, as the application process takes time.
What the visa status means
Kazakh citizens must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling to Spain. This visa covers tourism, visiting family or friends, and business trips. It permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. The visa is valid for all Schengen member states, but the main destination should be Spain.
The visa is issued by the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Kazakhstan. Apply in your country of residence. The visa is usually a single or multiple-entry type. Check the validity dates on the visa sticker carefully before travel.
Before you travel and at the border
Carry your passport and the visa sticker. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. At the border, Spanish police may ask for proof of accommodation, return flights and sufficient funds for the stay.
Two new EU systems are being introduced: the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). Check the official EU website https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ before travelling for the latest updates. These systems may affect how you enter.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport; fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Ibiza to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only and is not covered by this guide.
When arriving by ferry from Ibiza to Formentera, you may pass through a police check. Keep your passport and visa ready. The visa covers the entire Schengen area, so internal flights and ferries between the islands do not require additional checks, though random identity checks occur.
Staying longer, working or studying
A Schengen short-stay visa does not permit work or study. To stay longer than 90 days, or to work or study in Spain, you need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Kazakhstan before travelling. The process and requirements differ from the short-stay visa.
Check the official Spanish consulate website for the correct application procedure. The site https://www.exteriores.gob.es/en/Consulados/Pages/Consulates.aspx lists consulates and their requirements. Rules change, so confirm the latest information before applying.
