Chadian citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to travel to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera for tourism or business stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa must be obtained before departure from the Spanish consulate or authorised visa centre in the country of residence. No special conditions apply to this nationality.

What the visa means in practice

A Schengen short-stay visa allows a Chadian citizen to enter Spain and travel freely within the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa is valid for tourism, family visits or business trips. It does not permit paid work or study beyond short courses.

The visa is issued as a sticker in the passport. Border officials may ask for proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds for the stay. Travel insurance covering medical emergencies and repatriation is required for the entire Schengen stay.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply at the Spanish consulate or visa centre in the country where you legally reside. Applications are usually made up to six months before travel. The consulate may request additional documents such as a letter of invitation or a detailed itinerary.

At the Spanish border, present a valid passport, the visa sticker and supporting documents. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. Border officers may ask about the purpose and length of the visit.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) receive flights from mainland Spain and other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca is a common transit point for connecting flights or ferries to the other islands.

On arrival at any Balearic port or airport, carry the visa and supporting documents. Immigration checks are routine. The islands are part of the Schengen area, so no additional border control applies for travellers arriving from another Schengen state.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not cover stays longer than 90 days in any 180-day period, nor does it permit paid employment or full-time study. For longer stays, a national visa or a residence permit is required. Apply at the Spanish consulate before travel.

For work, study or family reunification, check the official Spanish immigration website for the correct visa category. The consulate provides details on the application process, required documents and conditions. Rules change, so verify current requirements before applying.

How to apply

  1. Determine the Spanish consulate or visa centre responsible for your country of residence.

  4. Attend the appointment in person to submit the application and provide biometric data (photograph and fingerprints).
