Ghanaian citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa to travel to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business. Apply at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence before you depart.
What the visa requirement means
A Schengen short-stay visa is a mandatory entry document for Ghanaian citizens visiting Spain. It covers the entire Schengen area, so a single visa allows travel between member countries. The visa is valid for tourism, family visits or business trips lasting up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
The visa does not permit paid work or study. It is issued as a single-entry or multiple-entry permit, depending on your travel history and the consulate's assessment. Always check the visa's validity dates and the number of entries allowed before you travel.
Before you travel and at the border
Apply for the visa well in advance of your planned departure. The application is submitted at the Spanish consulate or the designated visa centre in your country of residence. You will need to provide a completed application form, a valid passport, recent photographs, travel insurance, flight reservations and proof of accommodation.
At the Schengen border, present your passport and the visa. Border officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay and your return ticket. Keep copies of your travel documents and visa in a separate place. Check the current entry requirements with the consulate before you travel.
Arriving on the islands
Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain and other European cities. Formentera has no airport; reach it by ferry from Ibiza. Ferries run from the port of Eivissa to La Savina in Formentera. Mallorca is a transit point only for connecting flights or ferries.
When you arrive at an airport or ferry port, have your passport and visa ready for inspection. The visa must be valid for the entire duration of your stay. If you are transiting through Mallorca, you remain within the Schengen area and your visa covers the transit. Check ferry timetables and port procedures before you travel.
Staying longer, working or studying
A Schengen short-stay visa does not allow you to work or study in Spain. For stays longer than 90 days, or for employment or study, you need a national visa or a residence permit. Apply for these at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence before you travel.
The Spanish consulate's official website lists the requirements for long-stay visas and residence permits. Processing times and required documents vary by purpose. Do not travel to Spain intending to apply for a change of status after arrival. Check the official site for current procedures.
