Zambian citizens require a Schengen short-stay visa to travel to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is obtained before departure from the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Zambia. The visa permits a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business.

What the visa means

A Schengen short-stay visa allows Zambian citizens to enter Spain and travel freely within the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa covers visits to Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera for tourism, family visits or business meetings. It does not permit paid work or long-term stays.

The visa is issued by the Spanish consulate in Zambia or the visa centre it designates. The application must be lodged in the country of residence. The visa is valid for the dates and number of entries specified on the sticker. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban from the Schengen area.

Before you travel and at the border

Before travelling, check that the passport is valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen area and was issued within the previous ten years. Carry a printed copy of the visa and supporting documents. At the border, Spanish authorities may ask for proof of accommodation, return flights and sufficient funds for the stay.

The visa does not guarantee entry. Border officers at Ibiza Airport (IBZ) or Menorca Airport (MAH) may refuse entry if the traveller cannot demonstrate the purpose and conditions of the visit. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina.

Arriving on the islands

Most visitors arrive by air at Ibiza Airport (IBZ) or Menorca Airport (MAH). For Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Eivissa to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only; ferries connect Mallorca to Ibiza and Menorca, but the visa covers all Schengen travel.

The visa is checked on arrival at the first Schengen airport, which may be in mainland Spain or another Schengen country if the flight transits there. Keep the visa and passport accessible during the journey. The visa is not required for domestic flights within Spain once inside the Schengen area.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not permit paid work, study courses longer than 90 days or long-term residence. For stays exceeding 90 days, a national visa or residence permit is required. These are applied for at the Spanish consulate in Zambia before travel.

For work, study or family reunification, check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate. The rules differ from the short-stay visa. The site imptbalearic.es does not issue visas or provide legal advice.
