If you hold an Azerbaijani passport, you need a Schengen short-stay visa to enter Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Apply well before your trip at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. Check the official EU visa list for the current rules.

What the status means

Azerbaijani citizens are not visa-exempt for Spain. A Schengen short-stay visa is required for tourism, family visits or business trips. The visa covers the whole Schengen area, so you can move between Spain, France, Germany and other member states within the allowed stay.

The visa is valid for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You must not exceed this limit. Overstaying can lead to fines or entry bans. The rules come from Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, which lists countries whose nationals need a visa.

Before you travel

Apply for the visa at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in your country of residence. You cannot apply at the border. Start the process early, as appointments may be limited. The consulate will check your documents and may ask for an interview.

At the border, have your passport, visa and supporting documents ready. Border guards may ask for proof of accommodation, return tickets and sufficient funds. Keep copies of your bookings and travel insurance. The visa does not guarantee entry; the final decision is made at the border.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for the Balearic Islands. Flights from mainland Spain or other Schengen countries are common. Formentera has no airport; take a ferry from Ibiza to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only, as this site does not cover it.

Ferry schedules and flight times change seasonally. Many services run less often from late autumn to early spring. Check the operator's website before you travel. The visa allows you to enter and leave the Schengen area multiple times, depending on the visa type issued.

Staying longer or working

The short-stay visa is for visits up to 90 days. If you plan to stay longer, work or study, you need a national visa or residence permit from Spain. These are separate from the Schengen visa and have different requirements.

Apply for a national visa at the Spanish consulate in Azerbaijan before you travel. The process takes longer and requires additional documents, such as a work contract or university acceptance. Check the official Spanish immigration website for current rules and procedures.
