Botswanan citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa to travel to Spain, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The visa is required for tourism, family visits or business stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Applications are made at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in Botswana.

What the visa status means

Botswana is listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, meaning its citizens must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa before travelling to Spain. This requirement applies to all Schengen member states. The visa permits stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, business or visiting family.

The visa does not allow paid work or study. For longer stays or other purposes, a national visa or residence permit is needed. The rules are set by EU law and are applied uniformly by Spanish authorities. Check the official EU visa list for the latest status.

Before you travel and at the border

Apply for the visa at the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Botswana. Do this well before your planned departure. The application requires a completed form, a valid passport, recent photographs, travel insurance, proof of accommodation and return flight bookings, and evidence of sufficient funds for the stay.

At the border, Spanish border police may ask for the visa, passport and supporting documents. The passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area and issued within the previous ten years. Biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) are collected during the visa application.

Arriving on the islands

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) and Menorca Airport (MAH) are the main entry points for flights from mainland Spain or other Schengen countries. Formentera has no airport; travellers fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from Ibiza Town or Playa d'en Bossa to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only for connecting flights or ferries.

When arriving by ferry from Ibiza to Formentera, the visa is checked at the port of departure or arrival. Ensure your visa covers the entire Schengen area, as there are no border controls between Spanish islands. Keep your passport and visa accessible during travel.

Staying longer, working or studying

A Schengen short-stay visa does not permit paid work or formal study. For stays exceeding 90 days, or for employment, self-employment or academic courses, apply for a national visa (type D) or a residence permit. These are handled by the Spanish consulate in Botswana.

Check the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain for current requirements. Rules for long-term stays are separate from the short-stay visa process. Do not assume the same conditions apply.

How to apply

  1. Determine your nearest Spanish consulate or visa centre in Botswana.
  2. Book an appointment for a visa application, usually online or by phone.
  3. Prepare all required documents: passport, photos, insurance, itinerary and proof of funds.
  4. Attend the appointment to submit documents and provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo).
  5. Wait for the visa decision; do not book non-refundable travel until the visa is issued.
  6. Collect the visa or have it delivered, then travel to Spain within the visa's validity period.
