Swazi citizens need a Schengen short-stay visa to travel to Ibiza, Menorca or Formentera for tourism or business. The visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen area. Apply at the Spanish consulate or the visa centre it uses in Eswatini before you travel. Check the official EU visa list for the latest rules.

What the visa requirement means

Swazi passport holders must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa before entering Spain, including the Balearic Islands. The visa covers stays for tourism, family visits or business trips. It permits travel across the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Without a valid visa, you will be refused boarding or entry.

The visa is issued by the Spanish consulate or its authorised visa centre in Eswatini. Apply well ahead of your planned travel. The consulate may require an interview. The visa is a sticker placed in your passport. Check the consulate's website for application details and current procedures.

Before you travel and at the border

Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and was issued within the previous ten years. Carry your visa, return flight tickets, accommodation bookings and proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Border officers may ask for these documents.

At the Spanish border, you may be asked about the purpose of your visit, your itinerary and your means of support. Have your travel insurance covering medical expenses and repatriation. The visa does not guarantee entry; the final decision rests with the border officer. Check current entry requirements before you depart.

Arriving on the islands

Fly to Ibiza Airport (IBZ) or Menorca Airport (MAH) from a Schengen country or directly from Eswatini via a connecting flight. For Formentera, fly to Ibiza and take a ferry from the port of Ibiza to La Savina. Mallorca is a transit point only; you cannot stay there under this visa unless your itinerary includes it.

When arriving by air, present your visa and passport at passport control. The officer may stamp your passport with the entry date. Keep your boarding pass and ferry ticket handy. If transiting through Mallorca, you will pass through Schengen border control there. Check ferry schedules for Formentera as they change seasonally.

Staying longer, working or studying

The Schengen short-stay visa does not permit long-term stays, work or study. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, work or study in Spain, you must apply for a national visa or residence permit. These are handled by the Spanish consulate in Eswatini and require separate applications.

Check the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate for details on long-stay visas and residence permits. The rules differ from the short-stay visa. For study, you may need proof of enrolment. For work, a job offer and work permit are typically required. Start the process early.
