In July and August the south-coast roads fill early and car parks at coves such as Cala Turqueta reach capacity by mid-morning. A hire car is essential for getting around from Villa Clariana. In the shoulder months of May, June and September the pace is slower, the roads quieter and the sea warm enough for swimming. Much of the island's tourism business closes from November to April; check the villa's opening dates.

Getting there

Menorca Airport (MAH) is 34.3 km straight line from Villa Clariana. A taxi takes about 35-40 minutes by road. In summer, seasonal buses run from the airport to Ciutadella; from there you would need a taxi or hire car for the remaining 8 km. A hire car collected at the airport gives the most flexibility for exploring the island.

Maó port is 37.7 km straight line away, with ferries to Barcelona, Palma and Alcúdia. Ciutadella port is 8 km away and has ferries to Barcelona and Alcúdia in season. In winter, flights and ferries are fewer; check the operators for current timetables. From Ciutadella, a taxi or hire car reaches Villa Clariana in about 10 minutes.

Beaches, sights and food nearby

Cala Turqueta, 7.4 km straight line away, is a white-sand cove with pine trees and clear water. Arrive early in summer or take the bus from Ciutadella, as the car park fills quickly. Son Bou, 21.7 km straight line, is the longest beach on Menorca, with dunes and a wetland. Cala Galdana, 11.2 km straight line, has a curved bay with restaurants and boat hire.

Ciutadella old town, 8 km away, is best visited at dusk when the streets are quieter. The Naveta des Tudons, a prehistoric boat-shaped tomb, is 9.3 km straight line away. The Camí de Cavalls, the coastal path around the island, passes near the south-coast coves. Mahón-Menorca cheese is produced locally; look for it in shops and markets.

A day from Villa Clariana

Start the morning with breakfast on the villa's terrace. Drive to Cala Turqueta (7.4 km) for a swim before the crowds arrive. Walk a short stretch of the Camí de Cavalls along the clifftop. In the late morning, visit the Naveta des Tudons (9.3 km) to see the prehistoric tomb, then continue to Ciutadella (8 km) for lunch in the old town.

In the afternoon, explore Ciutadella's narrow streets, cathedral and port. Drive back to Villa Clariana for a swim in the outdoor pool. In the evening, cook dinner using the kitchen and eat on the patio. The terrace is a good spot for watching the sunset over the south-west coast.

Practical tips

Much of Menorca's tourism business closes from November to April; check with Villa Clariana whether it is open during your dates. July and August are the peak months, with higher demand for car hire and busier coves. The Balearic sustainable tourism tax (ecotasa) is charged per person per night by the accommodation; the rate depends on the season and length of stay, and children under 16 are exempt.
